Bandhavgarh is also known as a white tiger country and the last known white tiger in the wild was captured by King Martand Singh in 1951. The white tiger, Mohun is now stuffed and in display at the Bandhavgarh museum. Bandhavgarh was declared a national park in 1968 and a tiger reserve in 1993. The core zone of the national park is spread in an area of more than 716 square kilometers.

At the center of the park, there is a large hill, known as Bandhavgarh hill, from which the national park derives its name. The hill is around 800 meters high from the sea level with several other hills gently tapering around it. Bandhavgarh Hill is also home to an ancient fort, at least 200o years old, and which was seat to the kings of erstwhile Bandhavgarh kingdom.

The National park, situated in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh is home to high density and diversity of wildlife. Besides the enigmatic tigers the national park is famous for the leopard, Asiatic Jackal, Bengal Fox, Chausingha, sloth bears, wild boar, wild dog (Dhol), hyena, and rarely seen wolves. Besides the epic mammal species (around 37 mammal species) these rich sal forests are also home of hundreds of bird species (250 species of birds).

You can visit the park through 4×4 open jeeps. The gates of the National Park are open for the visitors from sunrise to 10 am in the morning and from around 4 pm to dusk. This is also the time when the movement of wildlife is highest. As per the Forest department’s guidelines, one guide from the forest department is a must who will accompany you and provide you with all the vital information regarding the flora, fauna, and heritage of Bandhavgarh National Park. The most popular gate of the national park is the Tala gate.
